Redmi Note 7 Pro: Build and Display

Redmi Note 7 Pro Price in Nepal

Unlike the previous Note series design, with the Redmi Note 7 Pro, you will get the metal build at the top, bottom and sides with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and a gradient finish. It has the fingerprint sensor on the backside of the phone and is amazingly fast. The display is also now a minimalistic waterdrop-notch design and gives a higher screen-to-body ratio than before. This is the biggest design upgrade for the Note series that has been implemented to many of the smartphones nowadays.

Talking about the display, Redmi features a big 6.3″ IPS LCD panel with FHD+ resolution featuring a waterdrop notch which you can hide too in the settings. The screen is very bright, crisp and color accurate with better viewing angles. The display quality is good and is not differential with AMOLED display. Redmi Note 7 Pro does not have an official IP rating although it has p2i coating which is splash-proof.

Redmi Note 7 Pro: Performance

Performance is the one category where the Redmi Note 7 Pro really shows its value. After all, Xiaomi fitted it with the newly-announced 11nm Snapdragon 675 SoC to a price point not seen before. And what we have on our hands is just a powerful handset that is reliable not only for heavy tasks but even for hardcore gaming. This processor doesn’t even stutter and gets every job done. I never faced lag except for the MIUI that is not much optimized in Redmi Note 7 pro. It was a bit annoying but that’s the only place that I faced any stutter. And there is a handy tool called Game booster where you can record the screen while playing, snap screenshots and some small settings.

I mostly play PUBG Mobile at high settings and I never faced any lag and it runs smoothly. It heats up only after the long hour session of Gaming as it has metal sides and glass back. The price point at which this performance has been achieved is remarkable. I have not done the benchmark test before but for the sake of this review, I am giving the result of benchmarks for you to check out.

Redmi Note 7 Pro: Camera

Xiaomi has set itself ahead in the competition with the amazing camera on this phone. The Redmi Note 7 Pro is featured with a 48MP Sony sensor and it performs admirably in well-lit conditions for a phone under Rs 30,000. Day shots are well detailed with good and accurate color reproduction and vividness.

  • Gcam shot

There is a separate 48MP camera mode for the users who want the detailed and crisp images which creates a large image. But for me, the default 12MP is working more than fine which looks good and clear. The rear camera can shoot up to 4K 30fps video which is more than enough for this budget segment in Nepal. We can zoom up from 1x to 8x and the images are surprisingly sharp.

  • 8x zoom

As for low-light shots, the camera still is a big improvement from its previous generation smartphones. There’s a dedicated Night Sight mode which won’t help in reducing the graininess but it does improve the dynamic range whole lot better. You can install the Gcam port on this phone and have even better quality in images.

Talking about selfies, it clicks very decent portraits in well-lit conditions. In low-light, the quality does come down more than the rear sensor. Edge detection doesn’t seem to be fully accurate on Note 7 Pro like most of the other phones. Another upgrade is that we can even shoot 1080p 30 fps video from the front camera which is really handy for YouTubers.

The stabilization on the rear camera is decent as it works satisfactorily to cancel out usual shakes and jerks. Another thing is that it can shoot slow-motion videos in 120 fps which I feel is not enough for this price although it won’t make any difference to users.

There is a serious heating issue while using any camera app. It goes to around 42°C the highest heating point on the device and the battery also drains fastly.

Redmi Note 7 Pro: Battery

Xiaomi puts in a 4,000mAh battery inside the Note 7 Pro which it is doing in almost every Redmi phones. It gave me a battery backup of more than 6 hrs while playing PUBG Mobile intensely from 100% to almost 0%. With heavy gaming sessions, I drained the battery faster like around 17% per hour. While gaming or doing heavy tasks for a short time, it is enough to drag you through the rest of the day. This phone can last you for a full-day easily with regular use. But extensive gaming sessions will probably lead to the battery ending by night. It does not heat much while charging with the charger contained on the box although you can try it with a more fast charger.

Again, battery life is all very subjective and your mileage may vary depending on your use. Xiaomi provides only 10 Watt charger which can charge it fully from 0% in 2 hrs and 20 minutes. There’s also QC 4.0 support but sadly there’s no compatible charger to provide that fast charging in the box. You’ll have to buy it separately to enjoy it’s charging power.

Redmi Note 7 Pro: Software

Redmi Note 7 pro has MIUI 10 on the top of Android 9(Pie). MIUI 10 now has a lot of new features and it’s improved a lot over time. There’s dark mode, wallpaper carousel, a dedicated theme store, and a great gesture system that works perfectly. But there is many bloatware and ads and luckily that can be disabled in the app settings. Like the previous MIUI, it does not have more bloatware which is fine for me. Redmi really should have kept the app drawer which I feel missing and the default interface is not so pleasant for me. One big advantage is that you will be getting Android 10 updates in the first quarter of 2020. It also has a dark mode which is only enabled in the system apps only.

Redmi Note 7 Pro Review: Verdict

The Redmi Note 7 Pro is just an immense value-for-money phone for what it offers at Rs 25,000 in Nepal. Xiaomi has nailed the core essentials such as performance, camera, display, and battery which is an awesome deal to the budget smartphone buyer. In this budget phone, you will get a fast fingerprint sensor, face unlocks, premium looks with Gorilla Glass 5 protection, better camera, better processor and a massive battery. The only thing that troubles me is that the fats battery drain and heating issue on camera but that can be fixed with a minor update on MIUI.
