Movies move us like nothing else can. In this ongoing lockdown, movies have become a source of inspiration and entertainment for all of us. But there are thousands of movies to choose from. Choosing a good movie before watching it is crucial to ensure that the time spent is worth it. Especially, as a technology enthusiast, it is important to watch tech-based movies to learn new technologies, terms, and tactics you’ve never seen before. In this article, we decided to take a look at modern movies with a strong tech premise. So, grab the popcorn and press play to enjoy these five best movies for an IT enthusiast.

1. Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999)

Directed by Martyn Burke, Pirates of Silicon Valley is a 1999 American biographical drama television film. It depicts the impact created by the rivalry between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates on the development of personal computers. The movie is based on Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine’s 1984 book ‘Fire in the Valley: The Making of the Personal Computer’. Undoubtedly, Pirates of Silicon Valley is the biggest story in the history of the tech revolution. Therefore, this movie is really an inspiration for tech startups and entrepreneurs.

2. The Imitation Game (2014)

Alan Turing was a famous computer scientist who played a key role in the allied victory in the second world war. He does so by cracking the encoded messages produced by German Enigma machines. The Imitation Game is the entire biography of Turing where childhood, romance, technology, espionage, sexuality, and justice is discussed upon. The film portrays the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team of code-breakers at Britain’s top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II. Whether you have heard about Mr. Turing or not, this movie is a must-watch for all IT enthusiasts.

3. Ex Machina (2015)

This 2015 psychological thriller follows a young programmer who is selected to be the human component in a Turing test. The purpose of the Turing test is to determine the capabilities and consciousness of a new artificial intelligence robot. AI isn’t a new concept in cinema. But this recent Oscar-nominated movie solidifies itself as one of the best. It essentially warns of the not-so-distant day when robots become indistinguishable from us. It also brings light to the ethical implications that arise by making such robots. Finally, Ex Machina questions how far innovation should be pursued and the morality of playing God.

4. Steve Jobs (2015)

Steve Jobs is directed by Academy Award-winner Danny Boyle and written by Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin. It is based on Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the Apple founder. Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution, to paint a portrait of the man at its epicenter. The story unfolds backstage at three iconic product launches, ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac. In the movie, Michael Fassbender plays Steve Jobs, the pioneering founder of Apple. Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet also plays the role of Joanna Hoffman, former marketing chief of Macintosh. Likewise, Seth Rogen plays as Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple, and Jeff Daniels stars as former Apple CEO John Sculley.

5. Her (2013)

One doesn’t often see a romantic comedy based on technological advances. But, Her is one of a kind of movie that blends these two seamlessly. This Oscar-winning film follows a lonely man who develops a relationship with an advanced AI virtual assistant that’s personified through a female voice. Their bond escalates to a sexual level as the AI evolves. But the man later finds out it’s having relationships with thousands of people. This makes him feel betrayed. ‘Her’ does an incredible job of exploring the consequences of AI as it becomes more intelligent and life-like. So, this is definitely one of the best movies an IT enthusiast can watch.
