Xiaomi has done it again! The Chinese smartphone manufacturer continues to impress, this time by surpassing Apple to take the number two spot in the global smartphone shipment. Xiaomi has become the second-largest smartphone brand in the world in terms of unit shipment. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has overtaken US company Apple to retain the second spot for the first time in Q2 2021.
Data from Canalys has revealed that Xiaomi’s low-cost and high-quality strategy has pushed it past Apple. Now, both companies trail Samsung. In Q2, Xiaomi sold an impressive 18.7 million smartphones. It resulted into a 12 percent increase over the previous year and 87 percent more than it managed to ship during the same period in 2018. Xiaomi captured a total market share of 17% and shipped 87% more units than it managed to sell in the same period of Q2 2020. That is a staggering milestone of an increase in sales achieved by just a decade old company. It is a great number as compared to 1% increment achieved by apple and 15% increment in the shipment of Samsung Devices during the same period of time.

Formally known as the apple of china, Xiaomi quickly expanded its presence in 80 new markets in just four years. The Chinese smartphone giant became the market leader in densely populated regions including India. Likewise, it always stayed top of the market in its neighboring nations including Nepal Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Xiaomi’s strategy of providing powerful processors, memory, and display at a much lower cost than its competitors has proven to be successful right from the start. Xiaomi combined its brand leverage to carry out social marketing and phones started to sell through word of mouth. Constant innovation paired with strategic expansion and diversification of products became the key to its success. The same traits played an important role to make Xiaomi a household name for millions of people.
Xiaomi is no doubt one of the most exciting Smartphone manufacturer we’ve ever seen. The mobile company was only established in 2010. However, it has struggled to break the top 5 list of top Smartphone Manufacturers. Many people believed that a cheap young Chinese smartphone would never be able to make it into the same class as Apple and dominate the Smart devices market. This perception changed when Xiaomi was able to ship 87% more units than first quarter of this year. Xiaomi surpassed apple for the first time in global smartphone shipment. But, it has a long way to go in order to achieve Apple standards.
