Apple announced it’s mobile processor: M1 chip, a chip that “can be used” across all Apple devices like Macbooks, iPads and even iPhones (however, will not be). It is based on ARM architecture that we’ve seen in processors used in smartphones. The processor promised some serious performance improvements over Intel’s x86 architecture. Though some of Apple’s claims were just proved vague, the chip did give Apple an edge over how thin and power efficient their devices could be, iMac launched this year is an example.
This year, Samsung plans to bring on the Exynos 2200 which is the successor to Exynos 2100. Rumors suggest that it will have AMD GPU to rival the M1 chip. Samsung will introduce the chipset in some Windows laptops the company will launch this year. However, we should see its integration in the upcoming Galaxy S22 series with ARM architecture prior to laptops.
As for technical aspects, this ARM-powered chip-set should feature a 5nm process. According to some sources, the processor can outperform even Apple A14 in phones, the latest chip used in iPhone 12 lineup. Mobile processors like this has huge advantage, specially in cooling department. They take up less space with passive cooling, like heat pipes compared to physical fan.
Samsung and AMD’s partnership in 2019 has started to truly show effects in 2021. If everything goes right, we should see more devices with ARM architecture and AMD GPUs apart from phones and laptops, like tablets and other IOT devices.
Exynos 2200: Advantages
To sum up the advantages, here are some of the most important points that should support the fact that mobile processors are the future in everyday gadgets:
- Low power consumption.
- Higher efficiency.
- Less heating.
- Passive cooling for laptops.
- Company can use same chip-set for various devices, decreasing cost.
- Smaller manufacturing process, like 5nm can greatly improve performance.
- It will make devices thinner, lighter and more portable, thanks to passive cooling.
It will be interesting to see more and more devices using the same architecture. With Samsung up against the Apple, we should be ready for exciting competition and features in the upcoming devices both the company will be offering.
