Nepal Telecom and Ncell, the two renowned telecom operators have reported that they are ready to test the 5G mobile internet service in Nepal. Despite the impact of COVID-19, it is reported that about 115 operators from around 48 countries have launched 5G Networks in 2020. The fifth-generation wireless technology is aimed to deliver higher Gbps peak internet/mobile data speeds with ultra-low latency to enhance the user experience of using the internet.
According to Qualcomm, “5G is designed to deliver peak data rates up to 20 Gbps based on IMT-2020 requirements. Qualcomm Technologies’ flagship 5G solutions, the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X65 is designed to achieve up to 10 Gbps in downlink peak data rates.”
Nepal Telecommunications Authority’s Readiness for 5G
National Spectrum Management Form (NSMF) headed by NTA started to work on 5G frequency identification/planning before World Radiocommunication Conference 2019. The NTA board has already approved the 5G frequencies, ranges, bandwidth etc. recommended by the NSMF and had submitted them to the frequency committee. The frequency committee has already approved 5G trials.
Along with this, the state-owned telecom operator Nepal Telecom has got permission from the government to test fifth-generation wireless mobile internet services. The frequency in which Nepal Telecom will operate the 5G service will be decided by Nepal Telecommunications Authority which may range from 700 MHz to 26 GHz.
Another telecom operator in Nepal, Ncell is also ready to launch the fifth-generation wireless mobile network service in Nepal. Ncell is yet to get the 5G spectrum from the Government of Nepal for the 5G service trial.
According to an online portal, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has decided that Nepal Telecom will implement the fifth-generation wireless network for the first time in Nepal.
