When you think of the most durable and long-lasting laptop for business purposes, Lenovo ThinkPad series may pop into your mind. Continuing their X1 series from 2012, Lenovo has introduced its latest premium laptop named Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 this year with a 4K display and 4G LTE-A. However, the upgrade is not much as you would expect. The laptops come in different variants that go all the way up to i7 10th processors. What is so exciting about laptops and can it be popular in Nepal? Let’s find out in this short review of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 with specifications and price in Nepal.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Overview

Design

The laptop almost has the same characteristic design as we have seen on the X1 Carbon series. It has the same amount of thick bezels as on past models. The thickness has significantly reduced, going from 23.85mm on Gen 7 to 14.9mm on Gen 8. The back cover comes in two options according to the display chosen. We can get matte-finish carbon fiber with rich textures to reduce fingerprint smudges and dust particles on the back with a 4K display variant. The normal variant comes with just a matte black finish with a slightly more grippy texture. You can open the lid with one hand easily.

The design quality is excellent with MIL-STD 810G military-grade standards approved. There is no flexibility to the device when you are twisting it lightly. Yes, the keyboard has a bit of flexibility when you press keys too strongly, but will be fine for normal usage for a very long time.

On the top of display, you will get a camera with shutter and facial recognition IR sensor. Beside touchpad, there is a fingerprint scanner as well.

Display

The display is the most interesting feature every year in the series. You get a top-notch display, with excellent contrast and color accuracy. The laptop consists of 14″ 1080p/1440p/4K IPS display variants. They all consist of 100% SRGB, 85% AdobeRGB and 90% P3 color space. So, that’s considered decent for content creators and multimedia consumers. The display also gets bright enough at 500 nits.

But, if you choose a 4K display variant, you will get a glossy panel instead of anti-glare on lower models. That means, working in an outdoor environment where there is direct sunlight can get annoying at times.

Another thing is that the device uses PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) flickering, but a lower frequency of flickering will cause your eyes to strain quickly if you have sensitive eyes. This is especially below the brightness level of 50%. Above that level, you will have no problems. So, if you have sensitive eyes, you might want to get a lower resolution version, just to be sure.

Performance

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, as said earlier, is a laptop for content creators, and not for heavy gamers. The ultra-thin laptop comes with 10th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-10210U processor with integrated Intel® UHD Graphics (i7 variant is currently not available in Nepal). This is a low power consuming chip-set designed to keep the temperature low in most circumstances. There is up to 16GB LPDDR3 2133MHz RAM and up to 1TB of PCIe SSD for faster storage (512GB on Nepal). But, considering the price, it doesn’t keep up much excitement, especially in Nepal where laptops prices tend to get pretty high as compared to the global market.

Keyboard & Track Pad

The laptop consists of class-leading white, which is favored by almost all the creators. The keyboard is one the best part of the device, or all of ThinkPad series laptops. With tactile feedback and 1.5 mm travel distance, you will love to use the keyboard very often having LED backlit. The function key and left control key are interchanged, but can be set accordingly with software. F10 and F11 keys enables you to pick up and drop calls directly from keyboard. So, that’s a nifty feature as well.

There is a touchpad as well as red accent TrackPoint pointing stick for better navigation while typing. The trackpad is precise with correct amount of smoothness and friction. But, the trackpad is relatively small for a business person, who travels a lot without the need of extra mouse. So, it would have been a nice move to include a larger touchpad, at least for business laptop. The TrackPoint lets you move cursor without the need to raise your hand while typing to reach trackpad. So, that’s a really helpful feature as well.

Audio & Ports Selection

Unlike other ThinkPads out there, the audio on X1 Carbon Gen 8 is surprisingly good. This includes a four speakers setup supporting Dolby Atmos. There is a microphone up at the very top of the display.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Design

The laptop has a good selection of an array of ports with 2 x Intel Thunderbolt™ 3, 2 x USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type-A ports out of which, one is always on, HDMI 1.4 port, a connector for ethernet dongle, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. There is also a slot for an optional sim card slot as well.

Battery & Charging

The battery on the device is 4 Cell 51Wh with a 65W power adapter. The battery is supposed to last 19.5 hours, at least on paper. Charging the device should be fast filling the battery 80% in just an hour. So, you can be sure to take the device while traveling without much worry.
