For the purpose of discouraging the illegal import, sale, distribution and use of mobile sets and making it more systematic; NTA is preparing to implement Mobile Device Management System in Nepal. Official distributors and importers must register device IMEIs in the MDMS system before selling cellphones when it is implemented. Only devices registered with the government have access to the national telecom operator’s network. The technology will be able to track down and deactivate non-registered devices, prohibiting illicit mobile phone imports into the nation.

Information issued by the Telecommunication Authority of Nepal regarding IMEI registration of mobile sets
For the purpose of discouraging the illegal import, sale, distribution and use of mobile sets and making it more systematic; NTA is preparing to implement Mobile Device Management System. Before importing mobile sets in Nepal, it is mandatory to get Type Approval from Authority and register the IMEI number. Nepal Telecom Authority is currently working to implement the Mobile Device Management System and in order to expedite the work, the following information has been clarified for the information of all concerned.
- Customers will not have to re-register their IMEI in the case of mobile sets bought from businesses which had imported devices following the rules of Nepal Government.
- Many mobile customers are confused about whether to register the IMEI of their set in use or not. The registration process has been hampered due to technical problems in the system and NTA is trying to bring back the system and it will take some time for the system to run smoothly. Here’s the link to register your IMEI number https://eir.nta.gov.np/individual/register
- Arrangements will be made for the telecommunication service of the customer not to be disrupted in the case of sets being used by individuals imported from abroad and arrangements will be made to register IMEI by providing more appropriate time after the blocked IMEI registration system is activated. The Authority apologizes for the inconvenience caused to the customer due to the inactive IMEI registration system.
- While purchasing mobile sets in Nepal, NTA requests to purchase imported mobile sets with IMEI registered with NTA as per the rules and to get rid of unnecessary hassle and confusion by purchasing with mandatory VAT bill.
