Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra vs. Galaxy S25 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, released in February 2025, builds on the foundation of its predecessor, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which launched in January 2024. However, the differences between these two flagship models are minimal, leaving many to question whether the upgrade is worth it. Here’s Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra vs. Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Design and Build

Both devices share a similar design language, featuring premium materials like titanium frames and Gorilla Glass protection. The S25 Ultra introduces Corning Gorilla Glass Armor 2, offering slightly better durability compared to the first-generation Armor Glass on the S24 Ultra. The newer model is also marginally thinner (8.2mm vs. 8.6mm) and lighter (218g vs. 233g), making it more comfortable to handle.

In essence, the S25 Ultra provides a more refined physical experience with enhanced durability and ergonomics. While the design language is similar, the subtle changes result in a premium feel that may appeal to users who prioritize build quality and comfort. The S24 Ultra, while still robust, is slightly bulkier, which might be a deciding factor for some users.

Display Enhancements

The display upgrades are subtle but present. The S25 Ultra features a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen compared to the 6.8-inch display on the S24 Ultra. Both offer a resolution of 1440p, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and peak brightness of 2600 nits, delivering vibrant visuals and excellent outdoor visibility.

Despite the similarities, the slight increase in screen size on the S25 Ultra contributes to an improved screen-to-body ratio (90.3% vs. 89.12%). This means more screen real estate within a similar physical footprint, enhancing the overall viewing experience. The S24 Ultra’s display remains excellent, but the subtle enhancements in the S25 Ultra offer a more immersive visual experience.

Performance and Software

The biggest internal difference lies in the chipset. The S24 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (4nm), while the S25 Ultra is upgraded to the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3nm), offering better energy efficiency and faster processing speeds.

Both models come with 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, and run Samsung’s One UI on top of Android (Android 14 for the S24 and Android 15 for the S25). While performance gains are noticeable in benchmarks, real-world usage shows only incremental improvements. The Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy in the S25 Ultra provides a smoother and more responsive experience, particularly in demanding applications and gaming scenarios. However, for everyday tasks, the difference might not be as noticeable.

Camera Capabilities

The camera systems are nearly identical, with both featuring a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP telephoto lens with periscope zoom, and a 10MP telephoto lens for mid-range zoom. However, the S25 Ultra introduces an upgraded ultrawide lens, boasting 50MP compared to the S24’s 12MP.

Battery Life

Both models house a 5000mAh battery with identical charging capabilities, including 45W fast wired charging, 15W Qi wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.

Battery life is comparable, though the more efficient chipset in the S25 Ultra offers marginally better endurance for heavy users. The S25 Ultra’s optimized power management allows it to squeeze a bit more usage time from the same battery capacity, making it a slightly better choice for users who prioritize battery life.

Conclusion

The Galaxy S25 Ultra launched at a higher price point compared to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, reflecting its incremental upgrades. Whether the S25 Ultra is worth the upgrade depends on individual preferences and priorities.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is an evolution rather than a revolution. If you own an S24 Ultra, upgrading may not be worth it unless you’re drawn to slightly better durability or trade-in offers. For those coming from older models or other brands, both devices are excellent choices with cutting-edge features.

Ultimately, while the S25 Ultra refines an already stellar formula, it doesn’t introduce groundbreaking changes to justify its higher price for most users. The decision to upgrade should be based on whether the incremental improvements align with your specific needs and usage patterns.
