Samsung just launched its newest member in M series in India: Galaxy M42 5G. As the name suggests, the phone has 5G connectivity support under $300, making it the cheapest Samsung phone to do so. Overview
Design & Display
Starting with the design, the back panel looks identical to Galaxy A42 5G. Not only design, but almost every other specifications are similar too. The back plastic cover consists of four colored strips along with check pattern. Square camera module holds four cameras on the back. The flash is situated below the module. It weighs around 190 grams, hence it may feel a little heavy.
Talking about the display, there is a 6.6″ HD+ Super AMOLED display up at the front. We can see Samsung cutting corners here by using 60Hz and just HD resolution in the display to achieve that “cheapest 5G phone” tag. There is U-shaped notch at the front that holds front facing selfie camera.
Performance
The USP of Galaxy M42 is its performance and the chip-set used. It is Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G that is used in this phone. This is a 5G ready processor consisting of Qualcomm’s X52 modem for it. The CPU is based on 8nm process that consists of two high performance Cortex-A77 based cores. Thus, gaming on the phone should be a no problem.
In terms of storage, it starts with 6GB+128GB variant and goes all the way up to 8GB+128GB option.
Camera
The camera on the phone is almost the same as we’ve seen in most of Samsung’s mid-range devices now. There is a quad camera setup on the back with 48MP+8MP+5MP+5MP camera combination. It’s good to see Samsung using slightly better 5MP sensors for macro and depth lens, as 2MP sensors would have been useless. On the front, there is a 20MP, f/2.2 sensor for selfies.
Battery & Other Features
The battery on the device is a 5000mAh one with USB Type-C 15W fast charging support. The fingerprint scanner is situated underneath the display(optical). It does have 3.5mm headphone as well. As usual, Samsung Knox feature secures the device and facilitates quick backup too.
