Google is stepping up its smartphone game. The latest addition of Tensor to its already significant hardware arsenal could signal a new stage of tech domination. Google announced its latest lineup of pixel devices through a blog post. Apart from the sooner than expected announcement of pixel 6 & 6 pro, Google also announced that its upcoming flagships to be launched during the fall of this year will be powered by its own processors. The Processor named Tensor is the first system-on-chip (SoC) designed by Google. Tensor which has been in development for four years is set to finally power Google’s flagship pixel devices. The new chip builds off of two decades of Google’s computing experience. The new chip will lead the way in computational photography with its Night Sight mode for low-light shots.

Tensor leverages Google’s machine learning prowess and brings AI experiences to smartphones something which, the company couldn’t achieve earlier. Google’s new Tensor chip is also capable of advanced Neural Processing and provides a smart mobile computer experience. In addition to this, tensor will increase image processing time with the help of machine learning capabilities. Google has designed its new chip in such a way that it combines the neural network and software on the device itself. Google stated that the chip is specially designed to deliver intelligent processing power with minimal hardware conversion through machine learning.

More on Tensor Chip

That should come as no surprise since Google has long released TPUs for its data centers. To know how exactly Google will use that silicon power to run things on mobile devices, we will have to wait for some time. Based on the principle of so-called “neural machine translation” (NMT) and neural computer vision (NCV). Tensor simplifies the tasks of today’s advanced neural networks. The chip is designed explicitly to handle machine learning tasks. It allows for accelerated performance while keeping power consumption effectively flat. The tensor chip will enable your phone to deliver better camera features, including Night Sight which was launched earlier this year. The chip also allows the Pixel Call Screen feature to transcribe incoming calls. Similarly, it generates the great high-quality bokeh effect (background blur) you get in Portrait mode shots. These are some of the examples where Tensor chips make your phone smarter and faster.

The launch is a new milestone for hardware innovation at Google. The company expanding its focus beyond its existing suite of consumer hardware products. It will also allow Google to bring some of its more advanced artificial intelligence capabilities to a wider range of phones.
