Apple today recently announced the new Apple Watch Series 9, featuring a familiar design with some notable improvements under the hood. Highlighting the updates is Apple’s new S9 SiP, a whole new double tap gesture, promising boosted performance and efficiency.

Design and Display

The Apple Watch Series 9 retains the iconic square shape and Digital Crown of previous models. New case finishes like Starlight, Midnight, and Product Red add fresh flare to the aluminum models. Stainless steel versions are available in silver, graphite, and gold.

Apple gave the display a boost, now reaching up to 2000 nits brightness for improved visibility in bright light. The always-on Retina display can also dial down to 1 nit for a better viewing experience in the dark.

New S9 SiP

Powering the Apple Watch Series 9 is the new S9 chip. Apple claims this first-generation processor upgrade in years provides a 60% speed increase over its predecessor.

The improved performance allows on-device processing for Siri requests, avoiding the need to ping the cloud. Even with the speed gains, Apple stated battery life remains at a solid 18 hours.

Enhanced Tracking and Connectivity

This generation also introduces an Ultra Wideband chip for the Precision Finding feature. Using this technology, Apple Watch owners can visually track the location of devices like a lost iPhone with directional guidance and accurate distance.
