Kathmandu University is one of the top universities in Nepal that has been offering various courses across different fields. It also provides several degrees in the field of computer science. Now, in an attempt to extend the scope of computer science fields, Kathmandu University School of Engineering is adding two new AI programs, Bachelor of Technology in Artificial Intelligence (BTech in AI) and Master of Technology in Artificial Intelligence (MTech in AI). The university is aiming to start the new intake for these degrees from September 2021.

The School of Engineering, Kathmandu University organized a press meet on August 9, 2021, regarding the launching of the two new programs. On the occasion, the Dean of the School of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Manish Pokharel informed the attendees and the journalists that Kathmandu University was offering for the first time these two programs in Nepal keeping into consideration the surge in the demand for AI knowledge and manpower both globally and nationally.

Kathmandu university Press Conference

Dr. Bal Krishna Bal, Associate Professor and Head of Department of Computer Science and Engineering remarked that the program would cater to the needs of the country in terms of developing AI specialists and also at the same time provide a platform to get Bachelor and Masters Degrees in such specialized areas within the country itself. The event was attended by dignitaries of Kathmandu University including Deans, Directors, and Heads of Departments.

After the press conference regarding the launch of the two new AI programs, Kathmandu University also held an Interaction program on KU-NCCS Study/Research Center. The main objective of the interaction program was to discuss how they can move ahead with the implementation of the decision made by the Executive Council of Kathmandu University.

According to the official statement made by the KU, the recently launched two programs will fulfill the rising demand of AI professionals in the world. The programs have been constructed in such a way that the students upon graduating will be able to compete in a global market. Not only the courses will be theory-oriented but also practical oriented. It is the first time in Nepal that a university has provided an Artificial Intelligence centered degree for students.

As for now, the university will be taking 30 students in BTech in AI whereas 10 students in MTech in AI. The BTech in AI degree will last up to 4 years and will cost students approximately 8 lakhs rupees. Similarly, the total cost of MTech in AI which is a 2-year degree will be around 4 lakh rupees.

Conclusion

Artificial Intelligence is taking the world in a swipe. Both the applications and usage of AI are tremendously increasing globally. Due to this most countries have already started to embrace the use of AI. Now, it is high time that a developing country like Nepal should also start to think seriously about its own AI future. These two AI-centered programs unveiled by Kathmandu University take us one step closer to our AI future. Therefore, I think it is very appreciative of KU for adapting to the global technological trend and enabling us to compete in the global arena.
