Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah has announced to ban screening of Hindi films in Kathmandu until the line “Janaki is a daughter of India” is removed from the South Indian film “Adipurush”.
Mayor Balen announced the ban on Hindi films in Kathmandu through a social media post. “As long as the line ‘Janaki is a daughter of India’ included in the South Indian film ‘Adipurush’ is not corrected not only in Nepal but also in India, no Hindi films will be allowed to run in Kathmandu Metropolitan City”, Balen wrote.
Mayor Balen has given a deadline of 3 days to correct the line. The film is scheduled to release in Nepal from Friday.
He wrote on his Facebook: “Until the words ‘Janaki is an Indian daughter’ included in the South Indian film ‘Adipurush’ are not corrected not only in Nepal but also in India, no Hindi films will be allowed to run within Kathmandu Metropolitan City. 3 days have been given to correct this. Long live Mata Sita!”
The Kathmandu Mayor has objected to the portrayal of goddess Sita as an Indian daughter in the film “Adipurush” and announced the ban to mount pressure on the filmmakers to remove that reference. The Mayor wants the filmmakers to correct this not just for the Nepal release but also in the version screening in India. He has warned of halting the screening of all Hindi films in Kathmandu if the correction is not made within the 3-day deadline.
