The growth of digital payments and financial services has been accelerating rapidly in Nepal. To discuss the opportunities and challenges surrounding digital wallets in the country, Fintech Alliance Nepal (FAN) is organizing a Fintech Fridays panel discussion on “Digital Wallets: Challenges and Opportunities in Nepal” on January 19, 2024 at Hotel Yak & Yeti.
The event will bring together major players in Nepal’s digital payments space. The panelists include Dr. Gunakar Bhatta, Executive Director of Payment Systems Department at Nepal Rastra Bank, Binay Khadka, CEO of Khalti, Praveen Regmi, CEO of IMEpay, and Jagdish Khadka, CEO of eSewa.
We expect that the key discussion will cover the regulatory landscape for digital wallets, inclusion challenges, security and fraud risks, and the future outlook for the growth of digital payments in Nepal. While wallets like Khalti, IMEpay and Esewa have seen rapid adoption, panelists are likely to highlight issues like low internet penetration and lack of awareness as key obstacles. Cybersecurity and ensuring customer protection with growth may be another major concern raised.
Digital wallets provide immense opportunities to increase financial inclusion in Nepal. With increasing smartphone penetration and mobile internet access, wallets can potentially provide access to digital financial services for underserved populations if challenges can be addressed collaboratively between regulators, industry and other ecosystem stakeholders.
The event will be followed by the launch of BSc (Hons) Computer Science – Artificial Intelligence by The British College. As Nepal’s digital economy grows, skilled human capital will be key to sustaining innovations in the fintech sector.
Fintech Alliance Nepal has been organizing Fintech Friday as a platform for key players in the Nepali fintech space to network, share insights and shape the future of digital finance in Nepal. The upcoming panel on digital wallets will highlight key issues to be tackled to unlock the full potential of digital payments and financial inclusion in the country.
The event is open to all, and registration is required with a fee of NPR. 500. You can register for the event at https://kk5.io/Digital
